ŠIPČANIK

A UNIQUE WINE TREASURY

On the east side of Podgorica, on the vast Ćemovsko field emerges hill Šipčanik. Here used to be the fortress that the Crown Prince Danilo of Montenegro, took over from the Turks, later it became a military airport. The fortress, situated on the top of the hill, has a view of the lake Skadar and the city of Podgorica. Šipčanik today is the symbol of a new era in the history of the “Plantaze”. The story of this unusual wine cellar, however, has to begin in the vineyard.

Hill Šipčanik rises slightly from the last rows of vines making it the largest vineyard in Southeast Europe. This is the very birth place of Montenegrin Vranac. In the fifth decade of existence, the new chapter in the history of Podgorica’s “Plantaze” is opened, but also a new dimension of the wine from Ćemovsko fields. The old military airport was transformed into an impressive wine treasury, according to the principles of French chateaus. The cellar is located in the middle of vineyards, in the same soil, the same stone, from which the vine grows.

Basement “Šipčanik” was opened in 2007, after the first phase of reconstruction, which lasted more than a year and the investment of two million euros. The cellar is located at an average depth of over 30 meters below ground. In the form of a winding tunnel, 356 meters long, with an average width of 13.5 and a height of 7 meters. The temperature is almost constant – between 17 and 19 degrees. Humidity – 70 to 80%. The impressive space, at 7,000 square meters, the wine in wooden casks, nurtured in almost ideal climatic and technological conditions. The wooden barrels and bottles are aging two million liters of wine. Here, you will see the most famous brands of barrique barrels – oak from the best French regions, with varying degrees of Charring long … All this gives winemakers infinite possibilities for that fine, somewhat alchemical game, uniting oak and wine.

As part of the basement there is a wine cellar with 28,000 bottles of wine, aged 3 to 10 years … and there is also the oldest wine Plantation – Lesendro vintage 1979 – after nearly 30 years, still sprightly and smooth. It proves the fact that the longevity of Vranas has not been fully fathomed.

The spacious tasting room, 200 square metres big, is fully equipped for both professional tasting and wine evaluation, but is available to all tourists and passers-by along the wine routes, which here not only can taste all the wines Plantation – horizontal and vertical collection , harvesting and styles – but also to enjoy unforgettable taste of homemade food and local wines. Basement “Šipčanik” gave new momentum to wine tourism, which the company develops intensively over the past decade. Since it is located only 30 km from the Adriatic Sea, it is visited by tourists who come to the coast. “Šipčanik” is open for tourists throughout the year and it receives numerous visitors.
